Well, this was one of the coolest things I have experienced in a long time. I had Kevin from the band Hospital Lies reach out to me on Instagram after seeing my Review of We are chaos. He asked if I would like to check out their Ep, and possibly do a review. Um, WHAT?! This is a first for me, and of course I accepted this offer, because I would be honored. This frankly is one of the coolest things to happen to me since starting this channel. If any other bands out there would like me to do the same, my info is located in the description. Now Kevin, I’m posting this review whether this album is great or if I think it sucks ok? I’m sure you’d prefer it that way, biased reviews are no fun. So lets look into these guys a bit, and get on to the review, shall we
Intro
Hospital Lies is made up of the duo Joshua Scott Lead vocals, guitar, and Kevin Preston, Guitar and keys. Again, thank you Kevin! Their EP, All Hearts Bleed the Same was released August 20th, 2020. I will put links to their various sites below so you can go show them some love. So lets take this journey together, shall we. I must say I’m still pretty hyped this whole thing came to be, and here, we go
Alpha and Omega
Right off the bat, I am a sucker for long synth notes. It’s very atmospheric in the intro, the vocals sound great, mixed with the simple but pleasing guitar rhythm. The chorus has a cool melody too it. In their bio, they say they have elements of Dark Pop and that is the best way I can describe the sound of the chorus. Straight up I love it. The second verse is a shift, and is a mix of Marilyn Manson and Twenty One Pilots to Me, Me like. After the next chorus we hit a bass drop and I just think, wait, where we going now? A groovy as hell guitar bridge that’s where. That caught me off guard, We are off to a good start.
Kye
I think its time to go and smash some pumpkins. Joshua’s vocals really shine here, very.... Comforting, warm style. Little Indy twang with a darker twist. It just fits very well. This song is much more laid back after the opener, but sonically its very pleasing. We are 2 for 2
Ultraviolet
I’m getting inklings of a Linkin Park ballad with the intro to this one, and the vocals fit that distinction very well too. I will applaud both Josh and Kevin on the guitar in the chorus, I really dig your guys’ tone. The chorus has a great melody that has a good bob and weave to it. The bridge goes back to their style of ambiance which they pull off with great skill. It evolves into being more guitar driven again. The closing in the song sees an addition of a lead that just adds enough to push this song to damn good territory.
Bleed
ooooof dat bass though. Very thick, fitting to the title. The first verse reminds me of early slipknot clean verses, just synth driven. You can hear the influence of nine inch nails in this song. Josh starts to go off vocally in this one and I really dig it. I can see this song being in a Devil May Cry game. Do it Capcom. Overall I’d say this song is the heaviest of the album. If Halloween haunt was a thing this year I’d want to hear it in one of their side shows, that’d be sick.
I’ll be as honest and harsh as I can be, I did not expect this, but hot damn this was damn damn good. Please, if you are watching this, go and check out this EP right now, its everywhere where you can find music. Again, I am not saying this because these guys reached out, just ask my niece and nephew you can’t bribe me, but this was a breath of fresh air that I needed (ironic that the smoke outside has started to clear now too). Joshua, Kevin, you guys keep this up, because you have something here. Thank you again for valuing my opinion enough to reach out, just... thank you. I didn’t think I would give this rating out right after I announced it, but this album is most definitely Most Excellent.
