Metallica Album Rankings

Sometimes, I just sit, and wonder, what would I do, what would I do if I were the table

Intro

Well, I did this for Megadeth, feels only right to do it for Metallica. Since I did the Songs for Metallica previously, I will do the same for Megadeth. The Thrash Yin and Yang. I will only be doing the Studio albums, no live, NO COLLABS. Conveniently, there are only 10 of em, so here are my personal, Top 10 Metallica albums, here, we, go

St Anger

Look, I get that putting St. Anger at the bottom is the low hanging fruit, but frankly darling I don’t give a damn. It has some good moments here and there, some solid riffs. But it sounds like garbage. From the mix, guitar tones, vocal style, and the inspiration for the Houston Astros Scandal. Favorite song from the album is Frantic, its a solid song that I do listen to on the regular

Reload

Such an odd, odd, eyeliner filled odd time for Metallica. The follow up to Load. I actually really like some tracks on this album. I enjoy the more bluesy rock/metal sounds that these albums have, buuuuuut its just not Metallica. It’s part of the reason you find Metallica in the Classic rock section at Rasputin. Overall its just a little dull, and doesn’t get fully listened to often. The Memory remains is an exception as it made my top 10 list, and is my favorite of the album

Load

It really was a toss up of which of the Cumpletely connected albums would come first. What it came down too was there are more songs on Load that I like. Notes from reload are the same, including for my favorite song here Outlaw torn.

Outlaw Torn

Kill 'em all

Some people are gonna be piiiiiiissed but I really don’t care, this is my list. This Album is a classic, and I love it. You ask most fans and their bottom 3 will be likely a mish mash of what I had. Save for some people who are completely entitled to their opinion. But when you get to the top 7 of their albums it becomes a toss up really and just depends on your mood. It’s a thrash classic, but it Mustaine some of your britches to see it this low. I hold the top for the ones they wrote entirely themselves, for the most part. No Remorse takes it here, just like I have no remorse for putting it here.

Hardwired... to Self-Destruct

Their most recent release follows the original. This album was on repeat for some time when I first got it, but over the years its been out its lost a bit of its staying power. It’s what dropped it to here as I was going back and forth between it and Death Magnetic. It has some instinct classic songs on here including one of my top songs Spit Out the Bone, but it has equal amounts of somewhat boring songs that I skip for the most part. Most of the album sounds more like experiments or tributes, that yes, do sound good, but they are just kinda, meh. But great songs here hold it up

Black Album

The self titled album, or more affectionately known as the Black album. A ton of old school fans absolutely hate this album and I absolutely understand and I absolutely could not disagree with them more. It’s sold a bajillion records for a reason and its bad ass top to bottom. Does it use the open E too much, yes, does it go too slow for thrash yes, does any of this matter no. Enter Sandman is my favorite song on here and yes that’s the easy pick but again, I, Don’t, Care

Death Magnetic

I was really going back and forth between Death Magnetic, and Hardwired. While there are songs I like on Hardwired more than than any song on here, on the whole Death Magnetic is just better to me. I rarely skip any of the songs on here as it all flows. After St Anger this album was a breath of fresh air. It came out towards the end my high school years and I bonded with a few people over this album, so it holds some special places in my heart. The riffs in the Day that Never comes are a mainstay in my warm up sessions, but my favorite song is All Nightmare Long, it has no mercy.

...And Justice for All

Top 3 for me, once again, was not easy. I’m a guitar player, and Justice is the most guitar driven of the top 3 I would say. I almost put it at 2, but it is lacking something, and that something is obviously the influence of Cliff’s writings. Imagine how this album would have been if he was still alive. Still though, this album is amazing, and I absolutely love it to death. The Frayed Ends of Sanity almost topped my favorite songs list. The record is aggressive, fast, and spawned one of the greatest recorded live concerts of all time, but Justice lands at number 3.

Master of Puppets

One of, and some would consider the best, thrash albums of all time. It is metal perfection, but perfection doesn’t always make you number 1, just ask Cell. Back in my band days, Orion, and Master of Puppets were amongst our most played songs, with Master making it to shows as one of our main stays, its one of the most fun songs to play, ever. If you are learning guitar, and want to build endurance, and challenge yourself, its the song to learn as it will teach you a multitude of techniques that will help your playing immensely. My favorite song here is also one of my top favorite songs, Disposable Heroes. This album easily could have been #1, however

Ride the Lightning

Number one goes to their sophomore album, Ride the Lightning. This album, to me, is absolute perfection. It is the one that showed what they were made of and laid the foundation for what would become one of the greatest bands of all time. From start to finish, its pure love. I only wish I was alive to see them during this time. Thankfully I was able to see them live at the Big 4 show in Indio. Favorite song on this album, is also my all time favorite Metallica Song, Creeping Death

So, go ahead, tell me how I’m wrong. I know Metallica has some of the most die hard fans of all time that will defend them to the death. I am a massive fan but I’m also able to be impartial *cough Megadeth is better. Down below, list what your favorite Albums are, I’d love to see em, and be civil.
