Did a Megadeth themed Video, so naturally it's time for a Metallica one
Intro Video
I wanted to do a Metallica Albums ranking like the Megadeth one, however, they don't have as many, and frankly my list likely wouldn't be much different than the concensus. So, here are my top 10 favorite Metallica songs. Before I get to that however, here are some songs I wanted to acknowledge
Whiplash, Blackened, Nothing Else Matters, Ronnie, Fuel, The Unforgivin II, Frantic, All Nightmare Long, Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire
Some of those may seem a little surprising to be left off a top list, but this is mine, and theres some songs in the top 10 that I feel don't get the attention they diserve. So, here we go.
The Outlaw Torn
This song is severely slept on, no not this version, this one. The studio version James’ voice is somewhat annoying, and they overdue the effects on pretty much everything. The s&m version however is spectacular. It’s a much more broken down version, with the orchestra fitting it like it belonged here. Also, James sings his ass off here, plays the, while easy, solo flawlessly. Frankly, this version is perfect
The Memory Remains
I’ll be straight, this is really here for pure nostalgia. This was the main hit on the radio when I was a kid. But more than that, Marianne Faithfull’s haunting melodies, the straightforward but solid riffs, and just the wall of sound that come at you made this song stick with me. I don’t think I have ever skipped this song if its come up on playlists. I love this song
Enter Sandman
Is this song overplayed, yes. Is it overrated? Ummmm, no, I’d say not. This is the classic example of you trash this song every time someone mentions it as the best song, best riff blah blah blah, But as soon as it comes on the radio, you are off to never never land. That riff while again, yes, overplayed, is perfect. It hits you right in the chest and you cannot resist the urge to start head banging along to the thunderous beat. This song frankly deserves a lot of hate it has garnished, but it also has earned all of its praises.
Seek & Destroy
This song was my old bands closing song for almost all of our shows back in the day. It’s damn fun to play, and it is a crowd pleaser. Everyone knows the chorus to this regardless of the genre you listen too. It’s engraved to 3rd downs when you’re at the game and your team is on defense. It gets you pumped up. Quite frankly, and this may piss some of you off, but this song has the exact same qualities as enter sandman, just its on classic Metallica and purest shun anything Black Album on. Just think about it. Both are prevalent at sporting events, radio, riffs that hit you, and gets the crowd screaming at the chorus. This one is just better overall to me
No Remorse
When people talk of classic Metallica, I feel not enough, or if anyone at all really, mentions this song as one of the bests. This is one of the best vocal’s from James in the early days, has some of the best riffs. One riff in particular that is underrated is the bridge riff. The way the play with the G power chord is actually quite clever in its use of the root note transitions. This song is classic thrash at its best
Master of Puppets
Probably expected this one to be higher, and so did I. But after sitting and really thinking about it it fell to here. Disclaimer, the top 5 are all really tied for 1. So we can call it 1.a 1. B. 1.c yade yade yada. This song is one of the greatest of all times. This was also one of my bands mainstays in the playlist. I also have this song to thank for being so good at down picking. This song really is perfect, perfect balance of riffs solos, getting the rare James solo, nice drums, bass, gorgeous clean section, all of it. This song is the one that truly put Metallica on the map before their true global successes. Question is what have I ranked higher? Well some may surprise you
The Frayed Ends of Sanity
Oh wee oh, yooooo ho. Oreo. This damn song man. I love this song top to bottom. Contains some of the most underrated riffs in my opinion. Thrash perfection. It’s just so punchy, clever lyrics, one of the best vocals. This song goes all over the place, and it all just fits together. When ever they do decide to play this song live its fantastic. This song to me inspired the next song on this list, as it has very similar qualities to it. What could it be? Oh I’ll just spit it out
Spit Out the Bone
By far and away, the best song on Hardwired. I went into this album blind, and after the stellar first half of the album, the second half was dragging hard. I was legit starting to nod off. Then BAM! This song started and holy sweet bajeebus it was amazing. This song has everything every damn thing. Right from the get go you know what your in for, and it shows they still know how to write a damn thrash song. Which makes you wonder, what would an entire album be like if they just did thrash again. Please, Please Metallica, just do it. Again, everything about this song is absofreakenlutely perfect
Disposable Heroes
Favorite song from the master of puppets album. Again, a song I feel is far too slept on when mentioning the true Metallica classics. The main galloping riff is damn fun, The prechorus bridge is a perfect set up for one of the greatest chorus’ in metal history. This is also one of Kirks best solo’s. It’s clean shred with some nice melodies. The thrash titans at their thrashiest
Creeping Death
There are 2 moments that I consider the greatest live show crowed participation moments I have had the privilege to be a part of. The crowd squat during Spit it Out from Slipknot, and Shouting Death with 55,000 metal heads at the Big 4 show in Indio. That was simply incredible. To me, not only is this my favorite Metallica song, it is their best song. The main riff is spectacular, frankly every riff here is. Lyrical content is among the best for them too. This song is heralded among the greatest thrash and metal songs of all time, and I couldn’t agree more. So let it be written, so let it be done, this is my number 1.
