Same smith - love goes
I know, practically nothing of Sam Smith, other than the tracks I’ve heard every now and then on the radio. What I do know is he has one fantastic voice. Today we take a look at his brand new album, Love Goes. And Here We Go
Young
Starting off extremely subdued, but against the subdued harmonizing vocals are some deep lyrics. As the track progresses he sings more dynamic and its pretty brilliant
Diamonds
Continuing the laid back style for a bit with your modern pop build up that I think is stating to become more focused and not so jarring. It reminds me a bit of 90’s dance music here and that’s a good thing. There’s elements in this song that make me want to hear it in a good system, there’s dynamics I’m picking up on that would do great with one. Song doesn’t show his vocal ability as much but its a easy to listen to pop song
Another One
Song starts off pretty much the same as Diamonds, but he sings a little higher in register. It teases you a bit with a foe build up then comes back down. I dig the chorus as the backing melody is very pleasing. Vocal melody is nothing overly special but the music itself carries it
My Oasis
Lovely little guitar melody to begin. He uses much more falsetto in this song, and he’s very much known for his ability to control it. I’m not completely certain of which genre Sam is other than just pop, but if I had to guess one it would have to be Vibe'n music. Every track so far is perfect for just sitten back and relaxing while listening
So Serious
Why so Serious? Little Keyboard riff reminds me of Eiffel 65 so that’s a win to start. The chorus in this song makes it my favorite so far. It has a fantastic melody and is the loudest so far. The Keyboards come back as a little post chorus run and just ties a great little bow on it
Dance (‘Til you Love Someone Else)
If its not already I can see this one being a radio hit. It has a fun little bounce to it. If not a radio hit then a club hit at the least. As the title implies it makes you wanna dance. Most up tempo song so far and its just fun
For the Lover that I Lost
There is no replacement for the feeling of love, other than love itself. And until you find more to help fill the missing piece, that hole never goes away fully. Its feeling almost everyone has felt, or is going through. Regardless if its from a break up or deeper loss, non of it is easy. This ballad is beautiful
Breaking Hearts
The break up song, another song that if you know it, you feel it. It’s another ballad with more rhythm to it. Very straightforward and self explanatory.
Forgive Myself
You can feel his pain through his music, he shows great emotion in his singing and I think I’ve been missing that in most of the music I’ve been listening to recently. I’ve had to forgive myself a few times over my life, songs pretty damn real.
Love Goes
The Piano work here is very jazzy in a way. Like something you’d hear the house player just lay down. Backing bass builds into as the piano evolves into a constant melody for the verse. As for the chorus Sam matches the melody which accents the running nature of it. While it sounds good I’m not sure I fully like it. It does show great control. The song does go somewhere a little drastically and I get what they were doing with it, just a little off to me
Kids Again
Song sounds very different than the rest so far, no real vocal effects besides reverb, and the use for Guitar and bass used for the rhythm. Gives this song a very old school feel that I really like. I think Sam could make a pretty good 90’s pop rock album
Dancing With a Stranger
Focusing much more on the R&B style of pop for this song bringing back the bounce that’s been missing for a bit. This is another song that has little dynamics in the background that if y
ou listen careful builds out the thickness of the song. Sam and Normani really harmonize well too, both have a very full sound to their voices
How Do You Sleep?
Very fitting keyboard style for a song with sleep in the title. Song sounds a bit like modern Maroon 5, even though I think they are trying to do the Sam Smith sound, man I miss old Maroon 5. Definitely the most pop driven song of the album so far. Very easy subject matter to grasp. Don’t be a douche to your boyfriend or girlfriend. Communication is key dammit
To Die For
The song felt like it was building to a drop in the chorus, and I’m glad that it didn’t, it would have thrown off the flow that was going strong. There’s a slight undertone of synth vocals that sounds really cool. It’s another really relatable song, a whole lot of this album is relatable which adds to its listenability.
I’m Ready
Expected a much more upfront punchy song with him bringing in Demi, and it is for the most part but it isn’t overdone. While this song feels like inspirational song of awakening, I can’t help but think of sponebob when you keep saying I’m Ready back to back so much. Good song overall
Fire on Fire
I feel like he’s already used this melody in a past song, or at least another song I’ve heard before. Like it was a remix with different lyrics. It’s a very orchestral song so that’s cool, and the Spotify video clip is cute, so there’s that
While there is nothing that is overly ground breaking in this album, it is one of the easiest ones I’ve heard to just you know, Listen too. Most of the songs are very short so they do not overstay their welcome, and the flow from track to track is pretty seamless. Sam has an undeniably brilliant voice. Put that together with some pretty steady nice music, I feel would warrant you give this on a spin
